Yoga
If you would like to become fitter and more toned without the perspiration then why not try yoga? Classes are held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12 noon to 1 pm in the New Pavilion Clubroom. To try one of these classes phone Angie Fisher (B329 - AEAT) on 0870 190 2523 or Lori Fellingham (Nuvia) on 01235 514859. Classes are also held on Tuesdays in the Rutherford Recreational Society between 12.15 and 1.15 pm. To try one of these, phone Jerry Mayers on RAL 5882, or e-mail him on J.Mayers@rl.ac.ukIt is important to realise that yoga (at least the way we do it) is not about :-
- getting into impossible positions
- deep and strange meditations
- cultivating a hippy or new-age identity
Instead, you will find yoga is a gentle but effective form of exercise - good for increasing tone and mobility. It is also an excellent way to relax - this is paradoxically invigorating in the middle of a stressful working day.
No matter what your level, or indeed whether you a just a beginner, you can get immediate benefit from a class. Remember, it is up to you to determine how far you can take any position. Yoga is certainly not competitive - even people with years of yoga behind them find bending in certain directions much more difficult than other directions. Yoga should never hurt, but you may feel a stretch in certain positions.
If you have any medical problems, you should consult with your GP before beginning yoga. Common sense is the watchword. No responsibility can be taken for injuries sustained during the class. Do not attempt any position you are worried about and remember that the instructor is always prepared to discuss or help with your concerns. There are "safer" variants of some positions, and certain positions will directly help certain conditions. For example, one member started yoga to help with a back condition. Since his operation, he has found that the yoga is definitely restoring his mobility.
